8bit and Chiptune music has always interested me. With this track, I wanted to capture the mood of the original song by keeping it slow, moving, and ethereal. Lots of audio filter and audio pan helped create the atmosphere. Mellow hip hop drums stacked on top of their 8-bit equivalents keep the percussion feeling full, while maintaining a low-fi mood. The outro’s sound was created by an automation bug, but I liked what the software was doing so I tweaked it a little and opted for a fade out. I used YMCK’s Magical 8-Bit plug-in and Albeton Live to produce this track.

Remix: Sonic in Moscow

Before the death of Michael Jackon, the similarity between the ending credit music for Sega’s title Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and the song “Stranger In Moscow” was regarded as conspiracy theory. Recently, information and interviews have been rising to the surface that support this story; Michael Jackson wrote music for Sega’s flagship title.

However, Michael Jackson was uncredited for his work. Due to a number of factors, Sega decided to remove his name from their title shortly before release. However, there wasn’t enough time to re-program the music, so the cartages for the Sega Gensis shipped with Michael’s original tunes.

When I learned about this, I immediately when searching for what the Sonic music would sound like with MJ’s vocals. I found a surprising number of “mashups”, but they were kind of weird, muddy, or out-of-sync. So I got in the studio and made this “remix” I’m happy to hear the vibe of both pieces seems to have been preserved.

All samples are from the Sega Genesis release of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and the vocal track from Michael Jackson’s Stranger in Moscow. I discovered through compression, I was able to bring out the other instruments that were playing through Michael’s headphones during the recording session. Really amazing stuff.
